Selecting an Instructor

student diver Selecting an instructor for your diving education isn’t something you should take lightly. At all skill levels, be it your first time trying scuba or advanced training, it’s the instructor that makes the difference in how much you get from the course.

Email or call me with any questions or concerns you have. I’ll be glad to discuss your training and needs.

Here are a few things to consider when selecting an instructor and Randy's responses to them.

  • How long has the instructor been diving?
I have been diving for over 40 years
  • Can he/she provide you with prior student referrals?
I’ll be happy to put you in contact with divers whom I have certified
  • Does the instructor make the class fun and address each student’s specific needs or interests while still keeping your safety paramount?
I put your safety first, tailor class to your abilities and do my best to ensure you have a great time learning and playing
  • How much will it cost?
The Open Water Diver class costs $300 for instruction. This doesn't include course materials, such as books and tables. PADI now offers an online online eLearning program, so the cost of the academic part of the program will depend on what method works best for you. The minimum gear required is a mask, snorkel and fins, which start around $150.
  • How many people will be in class with me?
My average class size is four. You'll receive individual attention, so you'll get the most out of your class. I want you to be comfortable and confident so your first dive on vacation is fun and exciting—not stressful or disappointing. I don't have a minimum class size and won't cancel a class, even if it is only one person. Essentially you pay a group rate but get private instruction.
  • What type of training schedule is involved and how long does it take?
Classroom and pool sessions are held evenings or weekends or both. The Open Water checkout dives require two separate days, usually done in one weekend. I am flexible and will work within your available time, given pool availability and weather conditions.
  • What if I schedule a class and then have to cancel or reschedule?
I will work to accommodate your schedule. If you need to cancel prior to the first class, you will receive a refund, less a $50 cancellation fee.
  • How do I sign up?
Contact me via phone or email and we will arrange a meeting to get you your class materials and select gear, if needed.

Scuba can be a life-changing experience. Let me help you take that plunge.
